Product-Specific Questions

Q: What happened to DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods?

A: DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods has been discontinued. We now recommend using DEFY Extreme Wood Stain for all hardwood surfaces. DEFY Extreme Wood Stain offers superior protection and durability, with advanced UV resistance and water repellency to keep your hardwood surfaces looking great. This stain is formulated with zinc nano-particles that act like sunscreen for your wood, blocking harmful UV rays and preventing graying and fading.

Q: Can I use DEFY Extreme Wood Stain on pressure-treated wood?

A: Yes, DEFY Extreme Wood Stain is suitable for use on pressure-treated wood, as well as other types of wood, including softwoods and hardwoods. It is versatile and can be used on decks, fences, siding, and outdoor furniture.

Q: How do I prepare my deck before applying DEFY wood stain?

A: Proper preparation is crucial for the best results. Here are the steps:

  1. Clean or strip the wood: Use DEFY Wood Cleaner to remove dirt, grime, mildew, and mill scale from new wood. If your wood is extremely weathered or has old stains, use DEFY Stain Stripper to remove the old finish.
  2. Brighten the wood: After cleaning or stripping, apply DEFY Wood Brightener to neutralize the surface, restore the wood's natural color, and open the pores for better stain absorption. This step is essential to ensure the longevity of the stain.

Q: How many coats of DEFY Extreme Wood Stain should I apply?

A: For optimal protection and appearance, apply two coats of DEFY Extreme Wood Stain using a "wet-on-wet" technique. This means you should apply the second coat before the first coat dries completely. This ensures better penetration and uniform coverage. Allow the wood to dry for 24 hours before walking on the surface or placing furniture on it.

Q: Can I apply DEFY wood stain with a sprayer?

A: Yes, DEFY wood stains can be applied using a sprayer, brush, or roller. If using a sprayer, it is recommended to back-brush to ensure even coverage and proper penetration into the wood. This helps achieve a uniform finish and maximizes the stain's protective properties.

Q: Where can I buy DEFY wood stains?

A: DEFY wood stains are available for purchase directly from our website at defywoodstain.com. You can also find DEFY wood stains at select retailers and online stores. Check our website for a list of authorized dealers and retailers.

Q: How should I store unused DEFY wood stain?

A: Store unused DEFY wood stain in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the container is tightly sealed to prevent contamination and evaporation. Proper storage will help maintain the quality and effectiveness of the stain for future use.

Q: What should I do if I have more questions about DEFY wood stains?

A: If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact our customer service team at [customer service email] or call us at [customer service phone number]. Our team is available Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (EST) to assist you with any inquiries or concerns.

Q: In what circumstances is DEFY Solid Stain best?

A: DEFY Solid Stain is best for situations where you want to completely change the color of your wood or need maximum protection. It provides an opaque finish that covers the wood grain and imperfections, making it ideal for old or weathered wood. It's also great for achieving a uniform color across large surfaces like fences and siding.

Q: Can DEFY products be shipped anywhere in the United States?

A: All DEFY products are 250 VOC compliant, so they can be shipped anywhere in the country except Orange County, CA, or SCAQMD areas. These regions have stricter VOC regulations that our products do not meet.

Q: Can you apply DEFY Ultra over DEFY Extreme?

A: No, DEFY Ultra cannot be applied over DEFY Extreme. They are not compatible. If you need to switch from DEFY Extreme to DEFY Ultra, you must first strip off the DEFY Extreme using DEFY Stain Stripper before applying DEFY Ultra.

Q: What should I know about staining dense hardwoods like ipe or mahogany?

A: Dense hardwoods like ipe, mahogany, teak, tigerwood, and other ironwoods are very dense and do not accept stain very well. It is best to allow these wood types to weather for at least a year before staining. Even then, no stain will last very long on these woods. This is because their dense grain structure makes it difficult for the stain to penetrate and adhere properly. As a result, stains on these types of wood tend to wear off more quickly than on softer woods. Other examples of dense hardwoods include Brazilian cherry, cumaru, and garapa.

Cleaning & Preparation Questions

Q: Can I pressure wash my deck until it's clean? Or do I need a wood cleaner?

A: The answer varies based on the current condition of your wood. If you do decide to pressure wash your deck, use pressure between 1,000 or 1,200 psi. Also be sure to work with the grain and never against it, as it will cause damage to the wood's surface and splinters.

If you don't have easy access to a pressure washer, we recommend DEFY Wood Cleaner instead. It's easy to apply, but will require scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush to clean deep the wood, which makes your next coat of wood stain more effective and more beautiful. A pressure washer makes the project go quicker, and will result in a cleaner surface, but the scrubbing method can still be acceptable.

Q: Does the wood need to be completely dry before I apply the stain?

A: DEFY stains are water-based, and can be applied even when the surface is slightly damp. When the wood is visibly dry, it's ready to be stained.

Q: I constantly have mildew growing on my deck. Why does it grow there and how can I stop it?

A: If your wood is in constant shade and moisture is present often, you might never be able to prevent mold and mildew completely. However, you can improve your chances by keeping your deck cleaned and sealed with professional grade stains like DEFY Extreme, DEFY Ultra, and DEFY Solid stains. All 3 of these DEFY stain products contain zinc nano-particles to resist stains caused by mold and mildew growth.

Q: How do I clean mold and mildew stains off of my deck?

A: Mix DEFY Wood Cleaner with water (five parts water to one part cleaner), spray it on, let it set for 10-20 minutes, and rinse it off. To help prevent the black stains from returning, stain your deck with DEFY Ultra, Solid, or Extreme Wood Stain for the ultimate protection.

Application and Maintenance Questions

Q: How long does DEFY Extreme Wood Stain last?

A: DEFY Extreme Wood Stain is known for its durability. On horizontal surfaces like decks, it can last up to 2-3 years, while on vertical surfaces such as fences and siding, it can last up to 3-5 years. Regular maintenance, including cleaning and reapplication when needed, will help extend the life of the stain.

Q: Can DEFY wood stains be used on interior wood surfaces?

A: DEFY wood stains are specifically formulated for exterior use. For interior wood surfaces, it is recommended to use products designed for indoor use to ensure the best results and compliance with indoor air quality standards.

Q: How do I clean tools after using DEFY wood stain?

A: Cleaning tools after using DEFY wood stain is easy since it is a water-based product. Simply use soap and water to clean brushes, rollers, and sprayers immediately after use. For more stubborn residue, you can use a mild detergent or a dedicated brush cleaner.

Q: Is there a particular brush I should use with DEFY wood stains?

A: The best tool for the job varies by the type of job. When using a semi-transparent stain on decks and fences, the quickest and easiest method to apply DEFY deck stain is with the DEFY Deck BrushFor DEFY Solid Stain, a roller or paint sprayer are recommended.

Q: Can I use a paint roller to stain my wood?

A: A paint roller is the best tool for DEFY Solid Color Stain, but for DEFY Extreme, Ultra, or Essential, a car wash brush is the preferred method.

Q: How do I know if I applied enough stain to my deck?

A: When using DEFY Wood Stains, you can ensure that you've applied enough stain by following these guidelines:

  1. Uniform Appearance: After application, the wood should have a consistent, even color with a flat appearance. There shouldn't be any lighter or darker spots, indicating that the stain has been absorbed evenly across the surface.

  2. Finish: DEFY Extreme & DEFY Essential Wood Stain should have a flat appearance once dry. If the wood has a sheen or looks shiny, it indicates that too much stain has been applied, which can lead to peeling. DEFY Ultra is the only stain that should have a slight sheen with 2 coats. DEFY Solid can be applied in multiple coats and will have a flat finish.

  3. Test Water Repellency: After the stain has cured (typically 24-48 hours), sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up and doesn't soak into the wood, it indicates proper coverage and protection. If the water absorbs quickly, the wood may have needed additional coats. However at this point, once the stain has dried, it's too late to add additional coats, you'll need to allow the stain to weather for a season before you can apply another coat. Applying another coat after the stain has dried will most likely result in peeling.

  4. Wet-on-Wet Application: For all stains other than DEFY Solid, apply the stain in a wet-on-wet method. This means you should apply the second coat before the first coat dries. This ensures proper penetration and avoids over-application. Watch this instructional video for more information on this process - https://defywoodstain.com/blogs/videos/2-coat-wet-on-wet-application-instructional-video

  5. Avoid Over-Application: Make sure the stain is not over-applied. The product should not form pools or puddles. If you notice any pooling, brush it out while the stain is still wet. Once it dries, it's too late to correct.

  6. Follow Manufacturer's Instructions: Always adhere to the coverage rates specified by DEFY. Typically, one gallon covers approximately 100-150 square feet depending on the wood's porosity.

By following these steps, you can confidently determine if you have applied enough DEFY Wood Stain to your deck, ensuring optimal protection and appearance without the risk of over-application.

Q: What’s the best time of the year to stain my deck?

A: This can vary slightly based on where you live, but typically the Spring and Fall offer the easiest conditions to work in. Below 80° is ideal and regardless of the season, it's best to stay out of direct sunlight because it can cause the stain to dry too quickly.

Q: Is DEFY wood stain safe for the environment?

A: DEFY wood stains are formulated to be 250 VOC compliant, reducing harmful emissions and making them safer for use around your home and garden.

Q: Can DEFY wood stains be applied over old stain?

A: For best results, it is recommended to remove any old, peeling, or flaking stain before applying a new coat of DEFY wood stain. Use DEFY Stain Stripper to remove old finishes and DEFY Wood Brightener to prepare the wood surface for the new stain. This ensures proper adhesion and longevity of the new stain.

Q: What weather conditions are ideal for applying DEFY wood stain?

A: The ideal conditions for applying DEFY wood stain are when the surface and air temperatures are between 45°F and 95°F. Avoid applying the stain in direct sunlight, on wet or water-saturated surfaces, or when rain is expected within 12 hours. These conditions help ensure proper drying and curing of the stain.

Q: Do I really need to stain my deck or can I just let it weather naturally?

A:  We know it's easier NOT to stain your deck, but we've designed DEFY wood stains to be the next easiest thing! Leaving your deck untreated means you'll be building a new deck in a few years, and that's much more expensive than protecting the one you've already got.

Your home's outdoor spaces are an extension of your life, and they deserve both beauty and protection. DEFY wood stains will help protect your investment from UV rays, stains from mold and mildew, and moisture. Restore and extend the life of your deck with DEFY.

Q: My composite deck is already beginning to gray out. Can I use stain on it to keep it looking new?

A:  Yes, DEFY Composite Deck Sealer works well on most composite wood surfaces. Just follow all of the directions in the same way that you would if you were staining regular wood, and you'll love the results!
